They apparently caught a showing of George Bernard Shaw's Getting Married.

Apparently Horace Rumpole, and therefore John Mortimer were also big Shaw Fans. The fictional barrister often referred to his wife, Hilda, as She who must be obeyed, although never to her face, or within earshot.

I've never seen Rumpole of the Bailey, but I have heard of it. Actually, I'm glad it existed because many years ago, my wife and I saw Getting Married on Broadway with Simon Jones and Victoria Tennant.

I then saw the phrase on a T-shirt and coffee mug in a PBS catalogue without any reference to Shaw, but who cared -- I bought them immediately.
