All natural is healthier, right?

I can blame-- er, credit Dr. Jim Preggo with telling me this a few days ago when he found out about my blog. Normally, I wouldn't use one of the basic math puns, but then the needed imagery came to me, so I went with it. Of course, it has stick figures though.

Greetings, HeliosphereNY Con Attendees!

This past weekend, Friday, March 25 - Sunday, March 27, 2022, I attended the scifi/fantasy convention HeliosphereNY, temporarily relocated in Piscataway, NJ. It was their first live con in three years.

While I was there, I left a small pile of (x, why?) bookmarks by the freebies table, which were gone except for one by the con's end. Also, I donated 40 bookmarks, 10 of each of the four kinds that I had made over the years, to the eSpec Books Launch Party. Being that it was their first launch party in three years, they had many books to launch, but the most recent was Even in the Grave edited by James Chambers and Carol Gyzander. There were several authors in attendance to read from their stories. Additionally, Danielle Ackley-McPhail read from her latest book, Daire's Devils, an epic military sci-fi story full, and Keith R. A. DeCandido read from All-the-Way House, part of the Systema Paradoxa series of novellas about cryptids.

Bringing the readings portion to a close was yours truly, Christopher J. Burke. As you can see from the self-promotion at the end of almost every post, I have a collection of flash fiction, In A Flash 2020 available, and I have three flash stories in the anthology Devilish & Divine. I read one of the latter, "Bringer of Doom", about an ancient demon accidentally summoned by a preschooler. It got laughs and was found to be touching and heart-warming. Also, I know one young lady who asked me to personalize the copy of the book she'd just bought so she could read the ending.

I read a couple of stories from In A Flash 2020 earlier in the day, along with a couple of stories that I hope will be in another collection in the near, or at least not-too-distant, future. I managed to sell a copy of the anthology to an editor based on the two words "Kindergarten Noir". I warned her it was one of the shortest stories in the book, but she was not to be detered.

I had a good time, and the audiences seem to enjoy the stories.

If you came to this blog for that comics, welcome. I'm aware that the Comic Genesis mirror site is, at the moment, out of date. It's just a matter of time-allotment.

If you came to this blog because you heard me read, please, feel free to leave a comment. And check out my Writer's Page, which was created after those bookmarks were printed. It's at http://www.mrburkemath.net.

Thank you for stopping by.

All the things!

It becomes an info dump at times, particularly when the intervals come into play, and the eyes glaze over. The properties are related, of course. Increasing and decreasing intervals are inequalities that look like the Axis of Symmetry. And the positive and negative intervals are connected to the x-intercepts, aka the roots, aka the zeroes of the function, aka another info dump, and I am out of here.

Geometry Problems of the Day (Geometry Regents, January 2011)

Now that I'm caught up with the current New York State Regents exams, I'm revisiting some older ones.

More Regents problems.

Geometry Regents, January 2011

Part I: Each correct answer will receive 2 credits.

11. Which set of numbers does not represent the sides of a right triangle?

1) {6, 8, 10}
2) {8, 15, 17}
3) {8, 24, 25}
4) {15, 36, 39}

Answer: 3) {8, 24, 25}

I can't stress enough how much time you will save if you know the first few primitive Pythagorean Triples, and their multiples.

If you know 3-4-5, which becomes 6-8-10, 9-12-15, etc., 5-12-13, which becomes 10-24-26, 15-36-39, etc., 7-24-25, and 8-15-17, then you will recognize three of these immediately, or you'll recognize the one that you know cannot be correct.

If 7-24-25 is a right triangle, then 8-24-25 cannot possibly be because of the relationship of the sides.

If you didn't know these, you would have to calculate a2 + b2 and c2 to see if they were the same.

If choice (3), they are not. 64 + 576 =/= 625

12. In the diagram below of rhombus ABCD, m∠C = 100.

What is m∠DBC?

1) 40
2) 45
3) 50
4) 80

Answer: 1) 40

If this is a rhombus that angle ABC is supplementary to 100 degrees, making that angle 80 degrees. If this is a rhombus, the diagonal will bisect the angle, so angle DBC will be 40 degrees, which is Choice (1).

13. In the diagram below of circle O, radius OC is 5 cm. Chord AB is 8 cm and is perpendicular to OC at point P.

What is the length of OP, in centimeters?

1) 8
2) 2
3) 3
4) 4

Answer: 3) 3

Look at the image below and consider what I said in the previous question about primitive Pythagorean Triples.

You can draw radius OB, which has a length of 5 and is the hypotenuse of right triangle OPB. When a radius (or a diameter) intersects a chord at a right angle, it bisects the chord. (You can prove this by drawing OA and using the HL Theorem.) This makes AP and PB each 8/2 = 4.

So now we have an x-4-5 right triangle. You can do the math but x = 3. (Also, PC = 2, if they ever ask that.) Choice (3) is the correct answer.

14. What is an equation of the line that passes through the point (−2,3) and is parallel to the line whose equation is y = 3/2 x − 4?

1) y = -2/3 x
2) y = -2/3 x + 5/3
3) y = 3/2 x
4) y = 3/2 x + 6

Answer: 4) y = 3/2 x + 6

Parallel lines have the same slope. Eliminate choices (1) and (2).

Check which line includes the point (-2, 3).

(3) =? 3/2 (-2)
3 = -3, not true. Eliminate Choice (3)

(3) =? 3/2 (-2) + 6
3 = -3 + 6
3 = 3. Choice (4) is correct.

15. TIn scalene triangle ABC, m∠B = 45 and m∠C = 55. What is the order of the sides in length, from longest to shortest?

1) AB, BC, AC
2) BC, AC, AB
3) AC, BC, AB
4) BC, AB, AC

Answer: 4) BC, AB, AC

The shortest side is opposite the shortest angle. The longest side is opposite the biggest angle. Angle A is 180 - (45 + 55) = 80, which is the biggest angle.

The angles from biggest to smallest are A, C, B, so the sides from longest to shortest are BC, AB, AC, which is Choice (4).

More to come. Comments and questions welcome.

More Regents problems.

This one has a little star! This one's part of 2 PI ARRRR!!

In the past 14+ years, this comic has featured Sherlock Pi (a P.I.), Pirates, Pi vs. Pi, the Young Pioneers, and I. M. Pi.

There was also a Math Horror Movie ("A Slice of Pi") featuring Pi in the shower, but she didn't look right in the context of this comic. She was about to be attacked by Norman Deviation.

Happy Pi Day 2022 to All!

Here's a smaller version of the two images:

That joke washed out. Mike should try some dryer humor.

Shrink or stretch one thing, and you get a lesson in the basics. It's not like he can't read the runic symbols on the garments!

At least he can't get agitated.

This is probably the first time I put my main human characters in a "mini" comic. I've used the Anthronumerics(tm) once or twice.

Authentic Cosine

(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

When I mentioned this to my brother, he asked me if they served parabolas. What is this, cinco de mayo?

So both things actually happened: my googling like Ken, and my brother's response. Oddly, the term I was searching on was "cosube", which I believe is some kind of Spanish or Latin America food. It's extra odd because I didn't see the term on the restaurant's page.

The best I could guess was that "cosine" in this instance was some variant spelling of cuisine. I couldn't find a reference to determine if this was a regional thing or a language thing. But if my GoogleFu was what it should be, I wouldn't have landed on the page in the first page.

(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

It'll rattle your diverticula!

If I can find a place in the curricula.

I have to translate some of my notes into Spanish for the English Language Learners in the class. And after the third or fourth time I said "cuadricula", you can imagine the Legosi accent that I wanted to add to it. And then I remembered from the old TV GUIDE that the spanish stations didn't have "MOVIE" listings. They had "PELICULA". So that was added in.

I did try to find more Spanish words ending in -icula, but Google would only give me English. Or it would translate the phrase "words ending in -icula" into Spanish.

Sadly, I thought the translation was going to be "box", but it was "grid" or "square". Had it been "box", then the vampire would've been in a coffin.

I tagged this one "Halloween" just so it'll pop up when I click on it.
