Connecting the Dots

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2024, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Looks like they won't be forming any connections.

Welcome back to the comics. This is number 1982 (unless I missed a strip when I was counting recently), and I hope to make it to 2000.

If nothing else, I want to finish story lines that I started in May when my real-life class was so far behind with the new curriculum thrust upon us (and which I was rated "Developing" on curriculum design for a lesson I didn't design) that I had no time to work on anything more complex than the comic above. And as these things work out, the longer you go without getting back to you, the harder it is to get back to it.

By the end of June, I started thinking I should put out a book about Everything You Need to Know About Geometry ... but I remember how badly my last math book turned out. Granted, I'm getting better at it.

Any way ... let's see if I can get two comics out this week.

Happy Thanksgiving 2023!

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Only one person wants that, and it's probably the one that brought it!

There are also side dishes with limited appeal, which is why there are so many side dishes, particularly with large families who are thankful that they can all be together ... right before they start picking fights, being all crammed into the same area for too long. And so it goes.

People complain and say they hate it, but I enjoy the family getting together, even when I need to walk out of the room for a minute. Just so long as there's still stuffing. And gravy. And potatoes. And ...

There could've been a series joke there ... I have to make a note for next year. After 16 years, it's hard to come up with new math-related Thanksgiving jokes. I was going to do a food pyramid. Yeah ... did that 10 years ago. Maybe I'll come up with a new take on it.

They go in any which direction they wish.

Except when it's raining.

This is one of those jokes that when it occurs to me, I find myself wondering how I didn't think of it 15 years ago. Better late than never. And the later you get there, the more the meter has run up, which is only fare.

And do it often. As recommended.

We're in the Transformations chapter of Geometry right now, so these are coming to mind more readily. Plus they are easier to create than some of the more involved or elaborate jokes waiting in the queue.

P>Dated yesterday because it was supposed to have been posted after my book club meeting. It was not.

Opinions always welcome. Spam is not.

Quality Scale

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

You can't rush greatness, except with lots of money. You can't rush whatever this is, either, because there is no money.

I was going to change it to Time vs Effort, and leave money out of it, but effort takes time.

And for the past couple of weeks, when I've had the time, I didn't have the energy (okay, maybe that and time would've worked). I did have ideas for 12/31/22 and 1/1/23 comics but by the time I got to do them, I didn't want to back-date them, even with 2023 copyright dates on them.

Hopefully more this week. I'd like to see this strip make it to 2000 before I stopped. No, 2001 would be more appropriate.

Thanks for being here. You are here, right? Feel free to comment if you're here. Unless you're selling carpets or test prep classes or something like that.

Also, at some point, I need to upload my last for Math Calendar solutions for the people who aren't on the blog. I might adapt one or two of them into comics (which I've done before).

Signal-to-Noise 2

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

The caveat being that I strive for more signal in my own blog, but 100% math all the time would short-curcuit my brain.

This is the reason that the math jokes and questions give way to teacher and family jokes of other silliness. And why my Regents explanations try to have a conversational, rather than a purely clinical, academic tone to them. I couldn't enjoy that, and I don't think others could. Really, after the 15th math joke, anyone still here would be saying, "That's nice. What else you got?"

While I was composing this, it occured to me that I might've done something similar in the past. I did -- back in 2013 -- but the graph was different then the one I was envisioning now, so I went ahead with it. (Note the "2" in the title.) I needed a "quickie" after the last two comics.

Okay, now bring in da noise, bring in da signal!

If one wakes you up, the other will keep you up. Of course, one is more easier remedied than the other.

Age would be another factor.

I almost typed "fullness" on the bottom axis until it occured to me that I could use two different meanings for "volume".

x = 2 sec y

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2021, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

What a freq!

The construction of "sec y" is older than this blog, so I usually dismiss it. This is the first time that I've thought about it that a creative use for the pun came to mind.

Out of curiosity, I wondered what y = 2 sec xy might like. The graph below was created using Desmos.com. I love how it looks, and some of the finer details are missing.

Those who will not learn from Geometry will lose a lot of money to Geometry.

And as improbable as it may seem, whichever points are selected, the altitude in this problem will also be 3. The base AB is shown to be 3, so the area will always be 4.5 of those square boxes.

Yes, a vertical line will automatically fail the test named for it. And a North wind blows South, so there you go.

Happy Name Day to all the Anthonys and Antoinettes and other variations on this fine Feast Day of St. Anthony. If you ever lost something, you say a prayer to St. Anthony to help you find it. Except for a cause -- the patron saint of lost causes is St. Jude.

Piecewise Functions

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2021, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

All we are saying is give absolute value, a circle and the y-axis a chance.

I'm guessing that this joke occurs to me every time I have to cover the material in class, which leaves me wondering if I've done this joke before or not. Longtime fans might remember a previous occurrence. All google products are incredibly slow on the machine I'm currently using today. Isn't that odd? You know what else is odd? [Pause and wait for the audience to shout out the answer.] Yeah, I might use that gag again, too.

I mean, c'mon. I've been doing this for over 13 years now. And Wikipedia still won't acknowledge it.

During a continuous month of blogging back in May of 2014, I already have a write-up of piecewise functions (along with a joke about the Indy 500).
