Happy New Year 2025!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025!

There was a lot to put into one comic and I couldn't compress the graphs anymore without some of the lines disappearing on me or unless I was willing to dealing with a lot of pixelation. Since I had a lot of shading to do, I did not want the pixelation.

Besides, I wanted you to see all 2,025 of those wonderful little colored boxes!

The funny part is that I had an illustration in a math journal I kept more than a dozen years ago that I wanted to use. The problem was that the page, which was more than 45 boxes tall was not 45 boxes wide. It was a little more than 36, so I had an 36 by 36 square and everything in the comic about was there, but based on the smaller number.

So I recreated it from scratch.

Now, since 2025 is a a perfect square, and the only one that I'll see in my lifetime, until I live until 2116, another 91 years from now, there are a lot of fun facts because it is a perfect square. For one thing, squares are always the sum of two consecutive triangular numbers. Think about splitting a square along the diagonal, but instead, make steps. One triangular number will be one less than the other. Moreover, if you eliminate the center square, you can split the rest of the square into four congruent rectangles, each of which can be divided into two equal triangular numbers. So you'll have 8N + 1, where N is a triangular number.

Finally, N to the second power can always be represented by the sum of the first N consecutive odd numbers.

The bonus to all this is that 45 is itself a triangular number, being the sum of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9, so that just allows even more number play to occur. And though it seems like the oddest coincidence that (1 + 2 + 3 + ... + n)2 will always equal 13 + 23 + 33 + ... + n3

Enjoy the New Year! It should be wonderfully mathematical!

I'm glad I was able to get in one holiday comic this year. I love Christmas. It's a favorite time of year. However, the past couple of years ... life has a way of helping you reflect on quiet moments and enjoy family, which keeps me away from making comics, which take time.

If there isn't another update before Wednesday, have a Merry Christmas Day and enjoy your holidays!

Only one person wants that, and it's probably the one that brought it!

There are also side dishes with limited appeal, which is why there are so many side dishes, particularly with large families who are thankful that they can all be together ... right before they start picking fights, being all crammed into the same area for too long. And so it goes.

People complain and say they hate it, but I enjoy the family getting together, even when I need to walk out of the room for a minute. Just so long as there's still stuffing. And gravy. And potatoes. And ...

There could've been a series joke there ... I have to make a note for next year. After 16 years, it's hard to come up with new math-related Thanksgiving jokes. I was going to do a food pyramid. Yeah ... did that 10 years ago. Maybe I'll come up with a new take on it.

You have the freedom to solve this or not to.

The answer is left as an excerise for whatever app you math students use to do your homework for you.

Watching those Eyes in March!

Or something like that.

Today we celebrate having someone to watch your back. It's all about the eyes, right?

I'm guessing the History class mentioned that movie Mark was asking about.

Merry Christmas 2022

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Merry Christmas!

Fire D Cannon on D orders of D Major Johann Pachelbel.

Credit to Trans-Siberian Orchestra for the lyrics.

I'm sure I've heard this played in recent years, but this year it seemed to be in heavy rotation on the Internet station I was listening to at work. The funny thing about it is that when I hear it, it reminds me of something from a long time before TSO put their version on any album. I think this was used for TV commercials, specifically, diamonds and diamond rings, but I couldn't tell you what store. (They're probably not around any more.)

I only put the refrain in the comic because that's all I know and remember of the song. I looked up the rest, but I figured, this is what others might recognize, even if they didn't know the name of the tune was "Christmas Canon", based on Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major.

Again, have a Merry Christmas.

Happy Christmas Eve

i've been out all day (stii am -- at the in-laws) so the comic I wanted to do didn't get done. watch this space, maybe they'll be two tomorrow

If not, I hope you have a happy holiday, with family or friends or pets or memories.

God Bless and Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

At the in-laws, Christmas Eve has always been a fish dinner. It's called 7 fishes, but I've never counted them to know if it referred to the number of fishes or the number of fishes dishes. I've heard references to the 7 Sacraments and to the 7 Hills of Rome.

For the record, I eat some of them, but some members of the family have plain pasta with any clam sauce.

The family tried to recreate my FIL's tradition as best as they could. New traditions will be in the offing in the years ahead.

Long Lay The World...

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

Pining for the fjords. Or for presents. Or something.

My apologies if I've done this one before. I know I've thought it before.

It's a crazy time. I've come up with a couple of good ones, but the fact that I don't remember them a day later tells me that they weren't that memorable. I've been listening to Christmas music radio, so anything inspired by a song would reoccur to me should I hear it again. Much like the above comic.

I do have one more comic that I might start for next year because it'll take time that I don't have. Plus I have a couple other thoughts that I need to use this year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year to everyone out there who has kept me going. I plan on updating again before Sunday, but if I don't make it, I want it printed now.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate you whether you post or not. Especially those who post when I don't make math errors, but when I do, too.

I said shapes because my hand-drawn triangles didn't look like triangles. But they are similar!

I'm learning to code Scratch, even as I facilitate a class where the students are learning it as well. I doodled this Christmas tree so I could make an animated of a tree dancing around.

This is a learner's version of it, not a professional version. That is to say, the animation and music synch up sometimes, but it could synch up a lot more.

Dancing Xmas Tree.

Happy Columbus Day 2022!

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue ... there was probably more to that rhyme that I was supposed to remember.

Some might add that this has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. None of my Italian friends would be among that lot. However, many of them would get the reference.

As for the rest of the comic, I just wondered how long voyages would've gone if they brought along the kids...

If these ships look familiar, they might've have sailed against pirates ... or by pirates.
