cos(bells) = ring4

I'm glad I was able to get in one holiday comic this year. I love Christmas. It's a favorite time of year. However, the past couple of years ... life has a way of helping you reflect on quiet moments and enjoy family, which keeps me away from making comics, which take time.

If there isn't another update before Wednesday, have a Merry Christmas Day and enjoy your holidays!

Positive One

Like your imaginary friends, you can be the positive one.

Now, I know the value of i, but what do we know about all those b g's?

If you're wondering why I didn't do a "four i" joke, well, because I did one a looooong time ago, in January 2011.

This wasn't a good "Mike" comic and definitely not a student comic, so I fell back on the tried and true stick figures.

A little trivia: I've lived a good part of the past three decades only a few blocks from that famous street walk from Saturday Night Fever. The famed Lenny's Pizza just closed its doors recently after all those years.

I think somebody knows it. Right from the start.

In the real world, someone who often asks questions of the sort "Do you remember ... ?" asked about this song. And, of course, it was the first impulse.

I hope the puns don't cause Bad Blood.

This was a calendar puzzle. The question appeared on April 1, and the answer was posted on April 2. In a saner world, I would've had a chance to post this sooner than April 4 instead of a Blank Space. Would've, Could've, Should've. Don't blame me. I know All Too Well.

This is me trying.

Okay, I'm done now.

Getting Me Down

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Then rainy Mondays must be the worst! Especially if you argue with someone who's playing you like a song.

This comic was inspired by a rainy Monday, and the fact that I think I hear snippets of this song on the radio more on rainy Mondays than any other time. And that's silly.

To explain what's going on in the Venn diagram, the intersection of Rainy Days and Mondays are Rainy Mondays. However, Karen Carpenter quite clearly sings that "rainy days and Mondays always get me down" not that "rainy Mondays get me down". That means if it's a "rainy day", it gets her down, and if it's a "Monday", it gets her down. It could be one OR the other, OR it could be both. (Indeed, once you have one, you don't need to check the other because the condition has been fulfilled.)

So was Ms. Carpenter NOT down on Not Rainy days that were other days of the week?

We actually don't know that. We only know that either of these two conditions got her down. That's not to say that there aren't other conditions that would've gotten her down which did not fit into the lyrics of the song. However, it is safe to say that she might have had a bummer of sunny Thursday.

What gets me down is that I didn't get this comic up on Monday. And the amount of time between comics, of course.

Final question: Did you think from the title that this was going to be a gravity joke? Just wondering.

Merry Christmas 2022

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Merry Christmas!

Fire D Cannon on D orders of D Major Johann Pachelbel.

Credit to Trans-Siberian Orchestra for the lyrics.

I'm sure I've heard this played in recent years, but this year it seemed to be in heavy rotation on the Internet station I was listening to at work. The funny thing about it is that when I hear it, it reminds me of something from a long time before TSO put their version on any album. I think this was used for TV commercials, specifically, diamonds and diamond rings, but I couldn't tell you what store. (They're probably not around any more.)

I only put the refrain in the comic because that's all I know and remember of the song. I looked up the rest, but I figured, this is what others might recognize, even if they didn't know the name of the tune was "Christmas Canon", based on Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major.

Again, have a Merry Christmas.

Long Lay The World...

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Pining for the fjords. Or for presents. Or something.

My apologies if I've done this one before. I know I've thought it before.

It's a crazy time. I've come up with a couple of good ones, but the fact that I don't remember them a day later tells me that they weren't that memorable. I've been listening to Christmas music radio, so anything inspired by a song would reoccur to me should I hear it again. Much like the above comic.

I do have one more comic that I might start for next year because it'll take time that I don't have. Plus I have a couple other thoughts that I need to use this year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year to everyone out there who has kept me going. I plan on updating again before Sunday, but if I don't make it, I want it printed now.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate you whether you post or not. Especially those who post when I don't make math errors, but when I do, too.

ABCD Was a Rhombus

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2021, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

If you don't get this, maybe you're not a diamond. Maybe you're just a square.

Parallelograms have diagonals that bisect each other. This goes for every subclass.

Rhombuses (rhombi) take it a step further and have diagonals that are perpendicular bisectors. This means that by SSS (or HL, if you prefer), the diagonals divide the rhombus into four congruent triangles.

Flipping the problem sideways, if you start with diagonals perpendicularly bisect each other, you can prove that the quadrilateral is a rhombus using SAS and CPCTC to show that the four sides of the quadrilateral must be congruent to each other.

Sometimes Geometry proofs can be fun ... and sometimes you have to write them out precisely, taking some of the full out of it.

Bonus Comic

As you may know, I sometimes give the "official" answers to Calendar Math problems, and sometimes I do this by making a comic out the answer. Another one will be included here later today.

Such was life as the youngest sibling in an old aparment with an old TV set and no antenna on the roof.

The picture was usually snowy, and you were lucky if you could a hold on a good signal.

Natural Number

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2021, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Athreeduh Fourteen. She just floors me.

She may not be natural but she sure is rational, which some students find hard to fathom.

Their confusion stems from being told "Pi is irrational" along with "Use 3.14 for Pi". Through miscommunication, they start to believe that 3.14 IS Pi and then throught the Transitive Property or Something "3.14 isn't a rational number because Pi isn't rational" even though they are using a Rational approximation for Pi and not the value (or symbol) itself.

I also had to explain to a class how the RATIO 22/7 could not possibly be Irrational, which by definition means that it can't be written as a Ratio of two natural numbers, like 22 and 7.

A true artist is never appreciated in his own time. Or class.

Folks who follow the math problem calender on Twitter might've gotten a sneak peek last week at this little ditty. The plan was to use it here as well, but I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to use it. Or when, since the new school year keeps me busy until I get things settled into a routine.

The problem written in the top panel is how it appeared on the calendar. In the bottom panel, I rewrote it in a way more commonly seen in math class when covering combinations.
