(x, why?) Mini: Radian

Not the same thing at all.

They should invite her out for pie.

So I'm back. For how long? I don't know. I do't have any reasons for being away. This post has been a "draft" since May 31, and the comic is based on a joke told in class nearly a month ago.

Obviously, I needed to get back to the eclipse story becasue I had a two-part follow-up, but that's the kind of thing that takes time to work on. This comic, on the other hand, can be knocked out and posted within an hour. So why'd it take over a month? Again, I don't know.

This just hasn't been a great year scholastically even as things are going pretty well on the writing front. I'd been counting down to 2,000 comics for so long, and then I just came to a halt.

There probably are actual reasons, but not that I can (or will) identify right now.

Enjoy the ride. I hope to have more updates.

(x, why?) Mini: Polykite

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Read all about it in the aperiodical!

I admit that I don't know much about aperiodical tiling. Unlike tessellations, aperiodical tiling doesn't repeat. If you take kites and darts and make Penrose tiling, you can start with a nice flower (call it a rose or a penrose, if you will) and expand outward, but the patterns will never repeat.

The tridecagon shown in the comic is a "new" shape, recently discovered, that doesn't tessellate. It creates tiles that do not repeat. This is of interest because unlike kites and darts, this is a single polygon. That's something new.

It's called a polykite and is referred to as a "hat". I used both references, although I didn't manage a "pass the hat" quip. And, yes, like Polywhirl and Polycarp, I think that Polykite sounds like it sound evolve into another shape.

Or, since it's Geometry, maybe it should "transform".

Such a transformation likely wouldn't be a rigid motion. But the tiling definitely is.

Conway Circle

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Hello, Darlin'.

This was a math calendar inspired comic, with the answer, 22, being the date.

There isn't much more to say about Conway circles that isn't already stated in the comic. The incenter of the triangle will be the center of the outer circle.

I thought about putting the circle around my triangle, but it would be too big to use. I also tried to pixelate a picture of Conway Twitty to use in creating a face for this triangle. It was too freaky to use, so I went with something neutral.

It seems the most natural thing that in a world of Shapes, there would be a trapezoid ruler and keystone cops.

Yeah, I'll probably get them a new street to patrol somewhere down the line.

Equilateral

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Oval One wouldn't lie to Stoptroopers, would he?

And since they're "Stop" troopers, I had to make one red. White features didn't look right so I left them black.

Obligatory Math: Equilateral triangles are also equiangular, and vice versa.

(x, why?) Mini: Reuleaux

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Well-rounded and totally width it.

Obligatory Math (ObMath): Like a circle, a Reuleaux triangle has a constant width. I drew this by starting with an equilateral triangle (or what passes for one in MS Paint) and then adding 3 congruent circles such that each circle intercepted two of the vertices of the triangle. Then I deleted the rest of the circles. So, it's a little rough at the "corners" when I erased.

I could give some credit to the Math-a-Day calendar, which recently had a probably involving Reuleaux triangles. I thought I could add one to the "Shapes" theme. Sometime in the next week, I'll think of a joke I could've used instead of just "exchange" student, but nothing humorous came to me.

(x, why?) Mini: Prime Suspect

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

It looks like six is afraid of seven for some reason...

The problem I had with this joke was that "Prime Suspect" says "COPS" to me, but I don't have any ANTHRO-Numeric(tm) cops. My Cops are shapes (keystones, to be exact, and if you don't understand why, Google it) and shapes don't exactly have prime numbers, unless I explicitly add them. So I added them.

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Just breathe.

This was a throwaway joke that occurred to me when doing something else. I wanted to go more elaborate and then realized that it had to be kept simple. It was also supposed to be three horizontal panels, but then the dimensions would've been crazy.

(x, why?) Mini: Inscribed

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

It's a bad dream oval all.

Obligatory Math: Of the regular polygons, only an equilateral triangle and a square can be inscribed inside an ellipse (assuming it isn't also a circle).

There are limits to MS Paint (and it's worse with this ancient monitor I'm currently sitting at), but it's been my intent that the shapes in this particular world that look to be regular are supposed to be regular. That said, I changed the triangle image I usually use because it looked more isosceles to me. Thanks to this PC, I may have to touch up the comic when I get home.

Obviously, the officer is not regular, but he makes a point of stating what I wasn't sure was obvious, and what was important for the comic.

It's also important to realize that despite the usual "regularness", this shape world has Trapezoid Rule.
