Have One

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

Have One what? I don't know. But have one anyway.

I thought about making this a TV series in the world of the AnthroNumerics(tm), and I even thought about giving this number 1 eyes and labeling it an Anthronumeric(tm). Or maybe it actually exists in that world. Who's to say? Other than me, at some point?

Maybe Ian (1) might sport a new hairdo for a while.

This is "fair use" and satire, to the best of my understanding. No challenge to IP rights is intended.

Pi Piper

(C)Copyright 2023, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Happy Pi Day!

Update: Why, yes, I did post a nearly but not quite finished comic earlier this afternoon. I was afraid I wouldn't get back to it if something else came up as I left work or any time after (and things have been coming up). And this is a timely comic that can't wait for tomorrow. Thankfully, I got to put the final tweeks in place.

For all the Pi jokes I've used, most seem to fall in the pie or pirate category, along with "pi rates", not to mention Sherlock Pi (P.I.). So I guess it's understandable how I haven't touch on this one in the past 15 years.

Only Numbers

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Letters posing as numbers? Nothing is what it seems to be!

I was originally going to use variables and call the building the "Algebraica" but then simplified it. Since pi is introduced in early grades as a number, I went with e and i. R was an afterthought because I thought I needed something else and I didn't want to use another alphabet.

The font that the show uses is called The New Yorker (like the magazine). That and several similar fonts were available for download, but only for personal use. Right now, this website is personal, but I can't say that this will always be the case. And, technically, since Google ads have been turned on, this hobby could be considered a business by people who wish to bust your chops and take your money. So I went generic.

Happy Tau Day 2022

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Its proponents will always swear that its better but the general public just isn't interested.

This was something that I typed on Facebook (and possibly Twitter) six years ago. It came up today as a memory. So I shared it again. It got a couple of comments, so I made it this year's comic. (It make be evening, but it's still Tau Day!)

I've had a few different Tau characters. Most likely they'll never appear during the rest of the year. I'm not one of the proponents of tau. I teach Algebra to high school students. Let the Ultra Math Nerds use tau. (I don't count myself among their numbers even if my family and friends might.)

What Am I?

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

C could be i if r was i/(2π).

I thought about making this with i saying "What am i? but the expressions and equations that readily come to mind don't have r in them, and I wanted the r more than I wanted the i in the comic.

You can say that I went all around that joke before deciding on a formula.

Trust me. It makes scents.

Given the amount of typos I make with my lesson plans, you'd think I'd've done this one years ago.

X - Bar

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

It's the name of the bar, not the solution to a puzzle.

Okay, yes, there was a point when I considered back-engineering the frequency table to make the mean, as well as the mode, equal to 5. It wasn't worth the effort. At a minimum, the second table would have to be eliminated.

No comment on the contents of the beverages. Not everything in a math pub has to be a 7-and-7.

Zero Search

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

You 2 can be a 0!

First off, this comic was first published in Madrid in Boletín Nº50 from Instituto de Matemática Interdisciplinar (IMI), Universidad Complutense de Madrid. I promised them some new comics that I hadn't published here first. The problem is that the comic needed to be about math, not about teachers or geeky stuff, and it couldn't rely on a pun that might not translate. (As it is, the comics are not translated into Spanish. Not be me, at any rate.)

I had the idea for this one for a couple of weeks. When I finally decided to do it, I realized that I didn't like any of the titles I came up with for the talent show. The Next Zero, The Next Big Zero, Top Zero. Obviously, I couldn't include "America" since it was debuting in Spain. Finally, I just fell back on Zero Search, which works well for finding the roots of functions.

Yes, I probably overthought all of this.

For the longtime readers, that Nonnie Tyler ("Holding Out for a Zero") as the third celebrity judge.

Switcheroo!

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

Happy April Fools! The jokes on them.

The world of the Anthronumerics has never been defined exactly as to where it exists -- that is, in a parallel universe, or as a figment of the imagination. From the very beginning, I assumed it was something of a Sesame Street model, except that the numeric characters never interacted with the humans. For nearly fifteen years, I've kept it that way.

So a comparison to the Land of Make Believe isn't so farfetched, I would guess.

This one has a little star! This one's part of 2 PI ARRRR!!

In the past 14+ years, this comic has featured Sherlock Pi (a P.I.), Pirates, Pi vs. Pi, the Young Pioneers, and I. M. Pi.

There was also a Math Horror Movie ("A Slice of Pi") featuring Pi in the shower, but she didn't look right in the context of this comic. She was about to be attacked by Norman Deviation.

Happy Pi Day 2022 to All!

Here's a smaller version of the two images:

Two Two Two Two Two

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2022, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

As the title suggests, this is a sequel to Two Two Two Two! I bet you knew that, too.

I hope you don't mind that I posted it on a TWOSDAY! (da-dum-dum ... CRASH!)

And now we'll have to wait 100 years to rerun it. Some of my youngest readers might be around for that. If science advances enough, they might even be around for 2/22/2222.

But if I'm still around for 1/11/11, I'll feel like I have won.

When I said you wouldn't have a repetitive Groundhog's Day comic, I never said you wouldn't get any kind of repetitive comic.
