I know, the Ham joke was a little cheesy.

I haven't used Noah and his sons in quite a while. They were one of the early themes, and I thought I'd revisit them as we closed in on comic #2000.

Also, as anyone with fair skin can tell you, you can get burned on cloudy days. UV rays don't care about clouds.

Since I have such fair skin, I tend to stay covered up even in the summer, so I have more of an inverse tan.

What a freq!

The construction of "sec y" is older than this blog, so I usually dismiss it. This is the first time that I've thought about it that a creative use for the pun came to mind.

Out of curiosity, I wondered what y = 2 sec xy might like. The graph below was created using Desmos.com. I love how it looks, and some of the finer details are missing.

Last Known Whereabouts: Polar region.

Known Associates: some folks that live with sin.

As long as I'm bringing the characters back, I might as well get some use out of them. Right?

The existence of Laws implies some kind of law enforcement, right?

The Eggoids were some of my earliest characters. Every now and again, I dust them off and bring them back. They make for easy personifications of functions and symbols.

Trigonometry Jones & the Ancient Hex

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

(C)Copyright 2019, C. Burke.

This was originally supposed to have a "Focus!" "Directrix!" joke. That didn't happen. Probably because of how I drew the rope bridge.

Plus I knew I wanted the Trigger joke more. Oddly, the hardest part were the villains, who were originally the upside-down triangles from Temple of Duran, and then a title. Good thing I went with Hexagons, I guess!

Trigonometry Jones and the Running Gag, Part 3

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

(C)Copyright 2018, C. Burke.

You could say that brings us back to the origin.

Had I known that "Trigonometry Jones" would become A Thing, I might've planned for a compass to appear in that first run of strips. But then that would have compromised the first joke, which was that they were lost.

Seriously, T.J. started as extremely elaborate "right angle" joke. It all changed when I added the spiffy hat!

By the way, several months back, I started re-running own comics on Twitter on Saturday afternoons at 1pm ET, with the label #SaturdayMatinee.
This comic is timed to appear on Twitter the same time it appears on the blog!

Christmath 2016: Find the Area (UPDATED)

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

(C)Copyright 2016, C. Burke.

This comic brought to you courtesy of The Law of Sines. Have a Happy Holiday. It's the Law.

I drew this on the white board and took a picture of it with the iPad in the classroom. I posted the original photo (with my title and (c) notice typed over it) on the blog early in the day, but I had to wait until I got home to clean up the photo a little. Funny thing was that I could lighten it up, but I couldn't auto-adjust the contrast -- too much junk from Whiteboard Past became suddenly visible!

The original photo is posted below.

Have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holiday and Seasons Greetings to everyone out there.

Update: This came in email from longtime reader, friend and Scotch aficionado (which has nothing to do with this, just sayin'), Bill Ricker who wrote:

My favorite photo editor Fotoxx (only for Linux, best with Ubuntu) can do it too. IIRC it only rotates colors ... so Red->Green and Blue->Red instead of the Blue<->Green swap i did earlier.

So now we have a green tree with red lights, which fits the season a little better. Thanks, Bill!

I guess it was put off until after Memorial Day and then I just didn't get back to it. I'm glad I saw it in my notes! (I'm glad I keep notes!)

I hope the running gag was not what you expected it to be. My thoughts on sliding yardsticks were here in this article.

Trigonometry Jones and the Golden Ratio, Part 610/377

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)
(C)Copyright 2014, C. Burke.

So the Golden Ratio was actually a rare gem the whole time? Who knew?!

The gem came as close to the golden ratio as I could manage in Paint. Actually, it was closer, but I hated the way it looked, so I altered it a little to make it more esthetic.

It does seem like they've been looking for years. And now it's almost done.
