Video Call Hour (Going Live or Remote?)

This is all for the Birdies! Bye-bye!!

Rejected opening salutations included, "What's the skinny, little Minnie?" and "What's going down, Miss Downtown?"

This has been bouncing around my head for a couple of weeks. The main thing preventing it from being done was figuring that I wasn't going to get it done.

(Today's comic is broken down into parts in case the large one is too big to read.)

What's black and white and marches are over?

The Sisters obviously prefer stripes over orange.

I think that's Sister Thomasina Thum Thum bringing up the rear.

These things always lead to an argument.

Okay, not really. That's just an expression.

Watch out for those toppings when you make your own sundaes! More dollars and more calories!

Preparing for in-class instruction while also worrying about remote education has kept me occupied. Those who follow me on Twitter might recognize that I posted a portion of this because I was using it in class.

I expect more of this as pressures of time, work and life move in.

(x, why?) Mini: C Train

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

Train Trivia: The C train travels for most of its route along the A line. Hence, the Take the "A" Train reference above. Also, it's not particularly worse than any other line, which isn't to say that they're all good. Some mornings it seems like nothing's moving.

If you're looking for a punchline explanation, do a translation of "despacito". This actually led to a mildly amusing moment. I learned the word "despaciamente" in high school. At least, that is what I remember saying to my Spanish teachers "por favor". After double-checking despacito, to make sure I hadn't blown the joke, I started typing despaciament into the translate box. It was funny watching the translation change as I typed each letter from "slowly" to "dispatch" to "slow me down" and then back to "slowly".

(x, why?) Mini: Discrete

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

Discrete indiscretions.

After enough math, when I need to type out "be discreet", I have to stop and check the spelling, even though I know the two words are spelled differently. Not a big deal to look it up. It's not like it's cheating.

Disruption

Stand back. I'm drinking coffee here.

The "funny" part is that while I use the "two shot" fairly regularly, I don't use a standard three-panel strip very often at all.

I may give this another month or so. After that, either I'll switch to AnthroNumerics and other silliness, or I'm going to produce "timeless" strips that take place outside of the normal psuedo-reality. A return to normalcy, or at least to my own brand of insanity.

Back to School 2020

I think circulating the classroom is on hold ... except for circulating the air, I suppose.

Some colleagues are happy to be back in the building. Others are not. All I know is that the usual camaraderie is absent as people keep their distance (mostly), despite arriving on a subway or bus.

It's awkward and no one is entirely certain what is going on or what happens next. But wear a mask, wash your hands and carry on.

The Nightmare Before School Starts

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

(C)Copyright 2020, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

I never know what the new school year will bring. I always cross that bridge when I come to it.

The background picture was drawn by yours truly in MS Paint in December 2019 in response to a prompt by a friend on social media about some of the illustrations by Ralph Bakshi. This was my version of one seen in his version of Lord of the Rings, I believe. (I'm sure a fan will point out my mistake if I'm incorrect.)

The desks and chairs were not intended to look like they were crawling across the bridge, but it seems like they are. But it is a nightmare after all.

Tropical Geometry

(Click on the comic if you can't see the full image.)

(C)Copyright 2020, C. Burke. "AnthroNumerics" is a trademark of Christopher J. Burke and (x, why?).

You can't call this one low-hanging fruit -- the fruit hangs pretty high. Not that I drew any.

I like my palm green. I don't like my palm red. But I used to have a Palm(tm) Reader.

I debated using AR Christy or Forte for the font. I couldn't decide if either of them had a tropical feel to them.

ObMath: In mathematics, tropical geometry is the study of polynomials and their geometric properties when addition is replaced with minimization and multiplication is replaced with ordinary addition. If that sounds confusing, there's no need to go further. If that sounds interesting, there are many resources on the web you can peruse at your leisure.

I'd like to take my leisure on a tropical isle myself, but right now isn't really the time for it. For one thing, school is starting up again, and for another, I'm avoiding planes and cruise ships.

You know they're spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam, spammity spam!

This wasn't created with the e's I thought it would be. It was a little more difficult.

ObMath: Insert a value of 2.71828... as you will.
