Actually, some English teachers are impressed that a math teacher knows enough Shakespeare to poke fun.
Others are impressed that a math teacher knows the difference between "continual" and "continuous".

Oxymoron: a seeming contradiction like jumbo shrimp or impartial journalist. Deoxymoron: sucking the oxygen out of them.

Another Comic Spotted on Another Math Blog

Have you spotted any (x, why?) comics on any other weblogs, particularly math blogs (and not spam blogs)?

The Fantasy Island comic turned up at Carnival of Mathematics, a post on the JD2718 weblog, complete with attribution and link to the Comic Genesis site.

There was one other blog that had a link to the Interest comic, but the URL changes as it gets pushed back to older pages.

A lesson for all new teachers: don't do this in class.
Don't do it in a blog or a webcomic.
Don't even do it in a webcomic about making webcomics....

Um... This comic was intended for instructional purposes only.

Is anyone else having trouble viewing the comics?

For some reason, I can't see the last five or six comics on my site, even though they were there this morning. They're stored on a geocities website and their server is having a problem, I guess. So I uploaded new copies ... but I still have the same problem.

The weirder thing is that I can't see the last two comics at Comic Genesis even though they were there yesterday and this morning! And those images are stored on the CG server!

Update: The Fantasy Island cartoon was copied at Carnival of Mathematics blog, and there have been quite a few visitors to this and the comic genesis site because of it. That might be the reason why some of the newer images are unavailable.

Update 2: Things seem to be back to normal ... except my banner is missing. I'm working on it.

Calling it "Imaginary i-land" would have been as redundant as having an assistant named "Two-too".

And so we have also lost Ricardo Montalbán, who will be forever known to those of a certain age as the enigmatic Mr. Roarke as well as the subject of the cheesiest line ever uttered by William Shatner, "Khaaaaaaan!!!"

And, no, I don't know why today I decided to use only shades of gray.

R. I. P. Patrick McGoohan, Number Six (1928-2009)

It was a strange co-incidence that I sent everyone packing yesterday.
Somehow, that strangeness seems a little bit fitting.

R. I. P. Patrick McGoohan (1928-2009)

Here's a link to a story on the passing of actor Patrick McGoohan, known most notably for the short-run program, The Prisoner.

I used the "Number Six" joke a long time back (last April), and I've continued to use No. 2 as a recurring character -- even though, in the show, most of the Number 2s didn't get a chance to recur.

I almost wish I'd used Six in this cartoon. Ironically, today's episode (below) shows them closing up shop.

Trivia: Number Six was born March 19, 1928. McGoohan used his own birthday for the character as a way to show it was his character and not a continuation of "Secret Agent".

Yes, it's almost tax time again.

Oh, c'mon! I had to make at least one W-2 joke before they left!

Now Viewable in All 50 States!

Okay, so this blog was always viewable in all 50 states, but according to Google Analytics, referring to the United States, This country/territory sent 1,301 visits via 52 regions in the past 30 days.

That includes the District of Columbia and some unknown, unnamed region that sent two visitors. Nice to be popular.

Outliers and Outright Liars

Just to demonstrate how statistics can lie or, at least, disguise the actual numbers, take a look at the hit counts for the Comic Genesis page.

Take a look at the Average Daily Visits and the Average Daily Hits for the last few months:

MonthVisitsHits
Sep 2008951297
Oct 2008881243
Nov 200879878
Dec 20082593411

Hey! I suddenly got popular! People are showing up in droves every day!
Not quite.

Here's the daily breakdown:

On Dec. 16, I had 3,464 visitors, who made 52,121 hits on my pages, mostly due to a one-day link in the News section of Irregular Webcomic, after the pseudo-crossover. Sadly, the large majority of them didn't come back. I could figure out what my average would be excluding that one day, but I'm afraid to.

Standing in the middle of the intersection, shouting "Halt! in the name of the Theorem!" probably wouldn't work so well.

Maybe change the sign from "STOP" to "GO". That'll confuse drivers so much that they'll have to stop and think about it.

One Thing Worse Than . . .

Today we start a new feature here at (x, why?) called One Thing Worse Than . . . because it is better to take out our frustrations with our keyboards on the Internet than to use a baseball bat on an object such as a vending machine or a skull.

There are many of life's little annoyances that can be tolerated to some degree, but every so often something happens that's just a little worse, something that takes the situation just a little more out of your control.

Feel free to guess which of these happened this morning, and feel free to join in with your own as well.

You know what's one thing worse than having a vending machine repeatedly spitting out your dollar?
Standing behind a guy whose dollar is being repeatedly spit out by the machine.

You know what's one thing worse than being stuck behind a garbage truck?
Being stuck behind a guy who has plenty of room to pass that garbage truck but just won't do it.

Okay, I feel a little better.
Back to the cartoons tomorrow.

There's a book about these two that starts: "I. M. Pi. Pi am I. I build things that scrape the sky."

For those who don't do crossword puzzles and don't know much about architects in general, you might want to check out some information about I. M. Pei.

By the way, that isn't a "P", that's a "rho", named Karl.
