Never had a class where they waited until the end for questions. They'll raise a hand right away or just interrupt me. And I usually stop and check along the way anyhow.
In this particular case, the student was apparently sleeping with his eyes open. He didn't know what had been going on for the previous half hour or so.
(Thankfully, no longer a new teacher, I don't talk for half hour stretches any more.)
I feel like this happens because students have questions but are conditioned to "save them for the end."
